What if, instead of planning what we want 5 or 10 years down the line, we focus on what we want one year from now? This is the question that entrepreneur Hailey Thomas has built her system of career coaching around. This week, Hailey discusses how the thoughts you have about debt and cash flow may be negatively impacting your business. If you don’t allow yourself to see being in debt or having low cash flow as a part of owning your business, you won’t be able to grow or achieve your goals.

Challenge your perceptions

For many entrepreneurs, especially first-generation entrepreneurs, it can be hard not to fall into the same thoughts that a regular employee might have: that debt is bad and that a low cash flow should be avoided at all cost. These are incredibly limiting thoughts, especially in Hailey’s opinion, because her most successful clients are those that don’t shy away from making investments and taking risks with their money to reap the best rewards.

“Growth and investing requires financial risks in business. You don’t get to grow and you don’t get to invest without some sort of cost.”

Change your perspective

When it comes to trying to view debt and cash flow in a different light, Hailey recommends finding the conscientiousness and confidence to examine your thoughts and change your perspective. You can make debt work for you, you can make a  varying cash flow work for you. It is not about feeling comfortable in business, it is about finding the right path you need to take to create the business you want and to leave the legacy you’ve dreamed of.

“You always get to choose what you think about your cash flow and about debt and about investing.”

Create the results you want

It’s only through being able to challenge and change that you’re about to create. Hailey is a strong advocate for all of her clients taking the time to break down how their thoughts affect their business, no matter what these thoughts are. Thoughts create actions, actions create results. If you’re avoiding taking certain actions because you don’t want to deal with the cost, consider instead what you have to gain from each decision you make.

“You have to understand how your thoughts and your feelings create actions, which create results.”
